NEW Set of 3 Matariki Stars Limited Edition Print (Pre-framed)
This set contains Ururangi, Tāwhirimātea and Waitī and Waitā.
Waitī & Waitā
Waitī, holds a profound connection to freshwater and the diverse life within our rivers, streams, and lakes.
Waitā, the twin of Waitī, symbolises the vast expanse of the ocean and the bounty it provides in terms of sustenance gathered from the sea. Beyond its association with marine resources, this star holds importance for its control over tides and the ebb and flow of floodwaters.
Ururangi, embodies the essence of the wind. Its name, "the winds of the sky," reflects its significance in traditional practices where it was used to predict the forthcoming year's wind patterns.
Tāwhirimātea
Matariki, the Māori name for the constellation also known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters within the Taurus constellation. It originates from "Ngā mata o te ariki o Tāwhirimātea," meaning 'the eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea'.
In Māori pūrakau (Māori creation story) the offspring of Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, caused their parents' separation. Tāwhirimātea, the god of the winds, was so enraged that he ripped out his own eyes and threw them into the heavens.
