Tāwhirimatea Unisex Tihatī
Matariki is short for Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea, meaning "the eyes of Tāwhirimātea," the God of winds and weather. Tāwhirimātea, a son of Ranginui (the Sky Father) and Papatūānuku (the Earth Mother), was so devastated by his parents' separation that he battled his siblings but ultimately lost. In his grief and anger, he tore out his own eyes and cast them into the sky. This kōrero symbolises the deep connection between the sky and the earth and highlights the significance of te ao Māori.
