As Kupe chased Te Wheke (Octopus) across Aotearoa, his exploration led to the naming of numerous landmarks around Aotearoa. These names carry cultural significance to Māori and hold stories that have been passed down through generations.
Pūrakau like Kupe and Te Wheke explains the relationship that Māori have with our creation narratives which embody stories of the ocean, the land, Hawaiiki etc. It also talks about the journey Māori had from Hawaiki to Aotearoa.
River has written a blog which talks about Kupe and Te Wheke in depth, feel free to read it here: Pūrakau: Kupe and Te Wheke.
